✈️ Traveling This Summer With A Child With Feeding Challenges? How to Prepare for Success (Not Stress)

Feeding on the Go: Why Travel Can Help (or Hinder) Progress

🧭

Is travel causing mealtime anxiety?

Traveling with a child who has feeding challenges can feel like walking a tightrope—new routines, unfamiliar places, less sensory control. It’s easy to worry mealtimes are doomed because your child won’t find anything to eat. But here's the twist: travel can also unlock exploration and curiosity in ways home never does—if you prepare with intention.

See? It’s okay to sit on the ground to eat!

💡

3 Ways to Turn Travel into Growth

  • Pack Safe Foods
Bring familiar favorites—no shame in a peanut butter sandwich, bag of chips, or pouches. These familiar comfort foods help your child stay regulated and connected, even in unfamiliar places.

  • Plan for Regulation
Routine disruptions, sensory overload, and new environments? That’s normal, not regression. Prep your child with earbuds, cooling towels or travel fans, movement breaks, sensory toys—and give extra grace when emotions run high.

  • Embrace Novelty

New places bring new foods and different cultures. Embrace these differences and learn about the local foods. See if you can spot every color of the rainbow in the foods you are exploring, see how many different texture there are, and learn some new describing words. Inspire (but don’t require) your child to set a goal of exploring 1, 3…maybe even 5 new foods while on vacation! Being in a new place can sometimes bring out the bravery inside of us.

  • Celebrate ALL The Wins, Big and Small (Or None At All!)
Maybe they don’t taste the taco, but they look, point, or notice it. That moment of curiosity? Gold. Travel is rich in small victories but it also can be a time to celebrate non-food and mealtime victories, like growing together in your family connection, enjoying each other’s company, belly laughing until you spit out your water, snort, or maybe even pee your pants, and creating life long memories. It’s okay to take a break from focusing on feeding sometimes.

Start small. Be brave. Embrace the risk of trying something new.
